OHTF-1 in New York

Seventy-two members of Ohio Urban Search and Rescue Team (OHTF-1) arrived at the Jacob Javitz Center in Lower Manhattan New York in the early morning hours of Wednesday September 12th, and were involved in working for the rescue effort by 2 p.m. that afternoon. Rescue and Recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site were difficult at best. With members of Ohio's Team searching void spaces well below ground level in very dangerous conditions.

The team was divided into two shifts - a 12-hour day shift and a 12-hour night shift. They were assisting the Fire Department of New York in the area of the South Tower remains. Their work involved cutting with torches and steel work. They also used the search cameras, high tech listening devices and search dogs to help in the recovery of victims. Unfortunately, no victims were found alive.

OHTF-1 members reported that on their way to and from the World Trade Center site, the streets were lined with people holding signs and shouting, "We Love You!" Many celebrities have been lending a hand to the hundreds of workers, as well. Ron Howard, Billy Baldwin, Rudolph Juliani, Hillary Clinton, President Bush and many more either stopped by to help serve food to the rescuers, or to just say, "Hi!"

The team members worked hard during their week in New York, but felt it was worth every minute to support their fellow fire and police department brothers and sisters.

OHTF-1 returned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base on Friday, September 20th after spending nine days at the World Trade Center "Ground Zero" site in New York City. They received a hero's welcome as they returned. They symbolized the spirit and dedication that has made the Fire, EMS, and Rescue profession great. Helping our fellow brothers and sisters in their time of need.
