Gator's Canine Safety Tips

  • Always ask permission to approach and touch a dog. Never approach a dog without permission.
Some dogs are working dogs and cannot be touched while they are working. Some dogs do not like strangers to touch them.
  • Never approach a dog that is not with a person or one that is injured.
Dogs are unpredictable when injured and might bite. Get an adult or someone trained to assist with an injured or abandoned animal.
  • Never chase or tease a dog.
Dogs do not like this and it is not a nice thing to do.
  • Never try to take away a dog's toy.
They might try to protect their toy by biting.
  • Never reach through a fence to pet a dog.
This is their territory and they may try to protect their home.
  • Be careful around a mother dog.
She loves her puppies and will protect them if she thinks they are going to be harmed.
  • Never make loud noises around dogs.
This may startle or scare them.
  • Never bother a dog when he or she is eating.
They may try to protect their food by biting.
  • Never put your hand between two dogs.
Dogs often play with other dogs by nipping. If they are fighting, they will probably bite. Don't put your hand where it will get bit.
  • Always approach dogs slowly, carefully and from the side.
    Dogs don't like sudden movements.
  • Never approach a dog from the rear.
This may scare them or they may feel threatened and my bite to protect themselves.
  • Be kind and respectful to all animals.
  • Have your pets visit your veterinarian regularly for check ups and vaccinations.
