Cold weather prompts home warming fire safety alert

With temperatures dropping, Bellbrook firefighters are urging members of the community to use extra caution when using fireplaces or space heaters this winter.

Fireplaces are an excellent source of heat and provide a very relaxing way to enjoy the winter, but they're also very dangerous if left unattended. Residents are asked to ensure that fireplace doors are closed or the fire extinguished prior to leaving the home.

Proper flu and chimney maintenance and making sure items are not placed too close to the fireplace are two more keys to staying safe around the fireplace.

It's also important to teach children about fireplace safety in the home.

"While fireplaces are commonplace items for adults, children are often fascinated by fire," Chief Scott Hall said. "It's critical that parents teach their children to use caution around the fireplace to ensure that an accident doesn't occur."

Space heaters also cause problems in the winter -- especially when they are placed near flammable objects like curtains or furniture. They should be placed three feet away from these objects to allow for proper dissipation of the heat.

"There is one thing to remember with space heaters -- space heaters need space," Hall said.

Department officials also suggest that before plugging your space heater in this winter that you check the wiring for cracks, frays or nicks.
